The term alternative education
broadly refers to the public schools which have been set up by the
school district, within the state of Florida, for the population of
students that are not succeeding in the traditional public school
environment. Alternative schools offer students who are failing
academically or may have learning disabilities or behavioral problems
an opportunity to achieve in a different setting.
The Challenge Learning Center is the secondary Alternative
Education program for Columbia County Schools. It also houses
students with special needs, (Severely Emotionally Disabled and
Trainable Mentally Handicapped). Some of these students are
housed in self-contain classrooms.
The goal of the Challenge Learning Center is to improve student’s
academic performance, attendance, and discipline. The curriculum
is based on the Florida Sunshine Standards and the Columbia County
Student Progression Plan.
In additional to a rigorous academic focus, the Challenge Learning
Center provides support and counseling to students. A Behavior
Specialist is also assigned to Challenge to assist students with
learning to develop behavior modification strategies.
Students are assigned to the Challenge Learning Center for a
minimum of two nine week periods. Transition back to the regular
setting is contingent upon students earning level fours, calculated
based on our Success Point System.
