Horizon - Food Service Management Technology

In 2005, the Columbia County School District implemented Horizon.  This is a powerful, yet user-friendly system that helps manage our school food service operation.

The Point of Sale program is what maintains the student  database at every school site.  Students use a five digit PIN number that is assigned to them by the cafeteria manager.  The schools with picture ID badges use their badge in place of the five digit PIN number.

After making meal selections on the serving line, students type their PIN numbers or scan their badges on the PIN pad that is located on the serving line, near the cashier.  When the student arrives at the cashier's station, the student's account is displayed on the computer screen.  There is no identification of a student's status on this screen.  With the strike of a few keys, the student's meal is deducted from the balance of prepaid meals or the screen indicates that cash payment is needed.  When prepayments are made, the students can move through the line quickly.  This gives our students more time to eat.  It also minimizes lost or misused money.  This program also allows our central office to input all information used for processing applications for the lunch program that determines their eligibility.  All students can put money on their account.
