Melrose Park Art Program

Welcome to Melrose Park’s Art Connection.

     Melrose Park Art E-Gallery

In our classes students study art aesthetics (exploring the nature and value of art), art criticism (using higher order thinking skills to analyze and talk about art), art history (learning how, when, where, and why art is/was made) and art production (making art). Studying these four art disciplines encourages students to think critically and creatively, make connections between their classroom studies such as literature, math, reading, science, and social studies, build a store of visual images that are related to language acquisition, and also provide opportunities for students to question and make real world connections. Art also teaches that there are many ways to see and interpret the world. Learning in art requires the ability and a willingness to be flexible and accept unique possibilities of the work as it unfolds.

ALL students are artists! Art classes at Melrose Park are designed to encourage creativity, explore a variety of medium, solve problems, and provide a means of self expression. In addition to this students are involved in many cooperative learning activities which contribute to the development of social and motivational skills that are considered basic for the success in school, life, and work. When working on projects students develop skills to express ideas/images, discover the world around them, and simply experience the joy of making art.

Student artwork is displayed with great pride. Throughout the year there are many exhibits within our community where Melrose Park students’ work is put on view. We display in the Columbia County School Board gallery and offices, the public library, the tax collector’s office, and at the SunState Bank. Each spring Melrose Park Elementary participates in the Spring Art Show in Gleason’s Mall and in the Art Gala. Last year three art banners were displayed during Columbia County’s annual Quilt Walk. Near the end of the school year, students also participate in a county wide art celebration and award’s ceremony called Young at Art. Parents will be notified when their child’s work is on display off campus. Student work is also shown on campus. These exhibits are displayed on bulletin boards, in the lunch room, and in our school office.

Lastly, Melrose Park Elementary now has an e-gallery showcasing some of last year’s art projects. Please take the time to visit this new addition to our school website. Our entire faculty and staff are so proud of our young Melrose Park artists!
