Niblack's History

Niblack Elementary School was built in 1954 in an effort to consolidate elementary schools serving the African-American youth of Columbia County.  Because of her efforts to build, consolidate, and improve schools for area children, the school was soon named after Mrs. Minnie Jones Niblack.  Mrs. Niblack was an active force for education, having served as teacher, principal, and county level supervisor.  Since 1954, Niblack has housed different groups of students, thus forcing a name change on two occasions.  Following full desegration of the countyís students in 1968, the school housed most of the county's sixth grade students, as well as special education, thus, the name Niblack Learning Center was adopted.  In 1989, the school changed to Niblack Middle School, but still housed only sixth grade students.  With the opening of the 2000-2001 school year, Niblack made a full circle, coming back to its original name of Niblack Elementary School.  It no longer houses sixth grade students, but has become a neighborhood elementary school for Pre-K through fifth grade students.
